Vice President Mechanical

Mr. Thomas Tancula has 25 years of experience in line management of railroad maintenance operations. In his working career he advanced through a series of leadership positions and has held entry, mid and senior level management positions in the mechanical and labor relations departments in three major U.S. railroad companies: Milwaukee Road, Metra, the Chicago commuter railroad, and Wisconsin Central. Mr. Tancula joined Mr. Burkhardt's team at Wisconsin Central in 1996 as Director of Mechanical Administration. In that position he was responsible for the budgeting, training and planning functions of the company's mechanical department. Mr. Tancula joined Mr. Burkhardt in Rail World in early 2000.

Tom was responsible for the first major introduction of North American locomotives to Eastern Europe when in 2003, 75 General Electric diesel electric locomotives entered service on the Estonian Railways. The results were a one for two replacement of the existing locomotives and a sizable fuel consumption reduction.  At the same time, he was active in introducing better maintenance and inspection processes to trains and wagons that reduced delays and increased productivity.

Tom was the acting Vice President of the Mechanical Department of the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic during the first year of operation. With the MM&A’s team of experts, the car shop was reactivated after years of minimal use. Several fleets of cars were completely refurbished. Additionally, the locomotive fleet was replaced.

Mr. Tancula is active in several railroad professional organizations. He is a standing member of the United States National Railroad Adjustment Board’s Second Division.

Mr. Tancula received his degree in business from Elmhurst College in 1981. He has been trained in railroad air brake, locomotive and wagon systems, and has been trained by the Association of American Railroads as a Hazardous Materials Technician.
